Firstlink Training - January Training Month!

Wanting to get your Drivers CPC but can't find a suitable course? Well, you're in luck...throughout January, FirstLink Training will be offering Driver CPC courses every week, Monday through to Saturday.

Here at our Peterborough office, the day will start at 8am and finish at 4pm. This includes timing for two 3.5 hour courses and included lunch and breaks throughout the day.
NB: Times can be catered to suit you if we are coming out to your business.

Due to the space at our Peterborough office, we can have a maximum of 10 Drivers per day. Because of this, you will need to book your fast to guarantee you a place.
NB: This does not apply if we are coming out to you.

The cost of the course will be £75 per day. However, if you block book all five days, you will get the whole week for £325 (£65 per day).

Tuesday: Safe loading and Licenses and fixed penalties

10 Joys Of Employment

Seeing as last weeks post went down so well, we decided that we would stick with the gif theme and give you the 10 joys of employment this week! So, for those of you reading this from your desk at work, try not to laugh out loud too much...

1. Office computers and their internet connection...We've all experienced it...the wonderful office wi-fi that never connects and when it does, it decides to disconnect shortly after you start that really long email to that really important client. Oh yes, we understand your pain.

2. Office humour...Need we say anymore?

3. Getting caught by the boss doing nothing...We've all done it. You take two minutes to stare into space or to have a chat with your neighbour and just as you are doing it, your very stressed boss walks round the corner. Great.

4. That last painful minute that seems to last a lifetime - It's 4:59pm and you finish at 5:00pm. You have turned everything off, your coat is on and you are ready to go. Now, all that's left is to entertain yourself for what will be the longest minute of your life..

5. Phone calls - Don't get us wrong, there is nothing better than a good chin wag on the phone with your favourite client. But some days answering the phone at all seems like a job from Satan himself...can't they just leave me alone?!

6. When it's time to go home on a Friday...Five o'clock hits and for the first time this week, everyone is out of the door on time, any idea why?!

7. And then Monday comes back around...Did we really just have a weekend? Whenever you work Monday to Friday, the weekends seem to go quicker than ever. However, it's ok. Why? Because now you can start the count down to next weekend...

8. Coming back to your emails after a few days off...First day back after a week off and you have loads of stuff to do. However, you open your emails and realise that answering these alone is going to take you most of the day. What better way to welcome you back?!

9. Bringing food into the office...Whats that, you left some food in the kitchen for five minutes and now it's gone? Leaving food alone can be risky business in an office..

10. The awesome relationships you have with your colleagues...You can't deny that although they stress you out, tell bad jokes and eat your food, they are pretty awesome people to work with.

We hoped you enjoyed this weeks post as much as you did last week!

NB: A quick note to our weekly readers, if you ever have anything you want to see on our blog..anything work/recruitment related then you can email us at marketing@cityresourceltd.co.uk  or leave a comment down below! We want to create a corner of the internet that everyone can read.

10 Joys Of Unemployment

1. 'Why haven't you got a job yet?'- The dreaded question...well, jobs don't grow on trees, nor are they going to come looking for you. More often than not, it can take weeks sometimes even months to find a new job. As long as you are actively looking then you are heading in the right direction. So for now, here is the response you can give to anyone asking why you don't have a job...

2. Getting rejected - We get it, you spend hours applying for hundreds of jobs only to be turned away and rejected. It's heart breaking. So, we recommend you go home, relax and bury your feelings in a nice greasy pizza. Then, tomorrow you can start the process all over again.

3. The Job Centre  - Shuddering at the thought of having to wait in the long, sweaty queues at the Job Centre? Yes, us too.

4. Those 'pre-interview nerves' - You've not had an interview for the last five years and now all of a sudden, you have to start having them again. Its normal to be nervous, we'd start to question whether or not you where human if you weren't nervous. However, we don't recommend downing a bottle of Vodka beforehand.

5. Spending more time on your sofa than you'd like to admit... - It's ok, you don't have to disclose just how long you spend sitting on the sofa. It can remain between you and I.

6. Daytime TV. It's terrible, we know - Jeremy Kyle? Loose Women? They are something you won't miss when you go back to work. Just remember not to get too into it because honestly, in the real world we don't care who cheated on who.

7. Spending hours browsing Job Sites for something you can apply for - Job Sites are tedious. Or even more so...job applications. You can spend anything from five minutes to an hour filling out one application. And the worst thing?  You have to manually enter all of your employment history and everything. Can't we just upload a CV and be done with it?

8. Getting tired of your own company - All day everyday, all you see is yourself. No matter how pretty you are, even your own face will get boring after a while. Don't they say that talking to yourself is the first sign of madness?

9. Never knowing what time or day it is - Not having to work to or around a schedule tends to mean the days and hours blend into one another. It could be Monday or Friday...who knows?!

10. The feeling when you land yourself an interview- Having spent hours applying for jobs, you finally get that call having blagged yourself an interview. Feeling triumphant, you decide to reward yourself with a nap on the sofa and a bit of Jeremy Kyle....

Despite all of this though if you are persistent and committed, it'll be no time at all before you're back at your desk at 9 o'clock on a Monday thinking how much you love your job...bet you can't wait. Roll on the weekend!

It's Not Just About The Interview...

It's shocking how many people believe that all they need to do to get a job is impress the employer on the day of the interview. Well, they couldn't be more wrong...you are selling yourself from the get go. Everything you do counts and trust me, employers notice everything.

As a recruitment agency, we have a lot of people come and go. We see and hear a lot of things and over time, we have learnt just about everything their is to know about the recruitment process. When we created this blog, it was with you, our audience in mind. We want to help you when applying for jobs because lets face it, nobody wants to be unemployed.

So, with all of that in mind we have created a checklist for you to use throughout the application process to ensure you are the ideal candidate from the very beginning.

1. Applying online? Is your profile suitable?! - If you are applying for a vacancy through an online job board such as Reed, Jobsite or CV Library, please make sure your profile picture, username and email is suitable. No, we don't want to see you on a night out with your friends...and no, we don't want to see your hungover bedroom selfie. Will we be getting back to cheekygal01 ...no, we definitely won't be. We also won't be sending any emails to badboi@email.com. Seriously - keep it professional.

2. Is your CV up to date? - So you have to submit a CV. Is it up to date? Have you included all of your positions and a small description of your job roles? Are your contact details up to date?! Don't end up embarrassed and red faced in front of the employer because you've not updated your CV for the last five years and you no longer work for a corporate company but are unemployed. Dig out your 'CV writing cap' and UPDATE IT! Check out our blog post from the 12th August for more tips and advice!

3. Make sure you know what job you are applying for! - There is nothing worse than getting a call from an employer offering you an interview and not being able to remember which job its for. When applying, take down the job role, a contact number, the company name and the closing date. This way you'll have a rough idea who is calling and it won't leave you sounding confused and dazed over the phone.

4. Have you looked in the mirror? - Maybe you are applying for a job through an agency? If so, nine times out of ten they will require you to come in for an initial screening. You should treat this as an informal interview. Make sure you dress smart and present yourself well. Believe it or not, personal hygiene and appearance is important!! If you aren't using an agency, you will go straight to an interview with the potential employer. This leaves little room for error. First impressions are everything! Looking good will not only go down well with the employer, but it will make you feel more confident..it's a win win situation!

5. Are you available? - Stuck in a dead end job? Started applying for other jobs on a whim? Well, here at City Resource, we are all for finding someone a job that makes them happy! However, if you are applying for jobs whilst still at work, make sure you actually have the time to commit to interviews etc. There is nothing worse than giving someone a call wanting to offer them an interview to find out they don't have the time of day. If you don't have the time then please don't waste ours. Don't start applying for jobs unless you are fully committed.

Sounds pretty simple right? That's because it is! By bearing these five simple tips in mind when applying for jobs, you'll be the most desirable candidate out there. So, what are you waiting for? You have the materials, start making the product!

We no wot were talking about...do u?

As recruiters, we have seen our fair share of poorly written CV's, cover letters and applications. One thing is for sure, it's very off putting. When applying for any job, you are effectively trying to sell yourself. You are convincing the potential employer that you are the best candidate for the job. Don't ruin that with a handful of spelling and punctuation mistakes.

To make sure you are going to stand the best possible chance of getting your dream job, we have put together a list of commonly made mistakes and how you can rectify them. So, when you land your dream job thanks to your outstanding CV...you can thank us later!

Wen something is wrote incorrectley it is hard to read, yes? More often than not it can put ppl of reading it. U dont have to be a spelling wiz to know tht this paragraf is not readable. So, ask urselv...do u prof read everything u rite? Should u? The answer is yes.

➳ Chances are, if you give your potential employer a cover letter, CV or application that they can't read, they won't bother. If you know that you aren't the best at spelling or grammar, then ask a family member or friend who you trust, don't leave it to chance!

THERE IS NO NEED TO TYPE EVERYTHING IN CAPITAL LETTERS. YOU ARE NOT SHOUTING, THEREFORE DON'T MAKE IT LOOK LIKE IT.

➳ Using capital letters for names, places and at the start of a sentence is appropriate. Using capital letters to type full words or putting them randomly in is not. Some applications may require you to write in capital (or block) letters however, if they don't specifically ask for it then don't do it! Using only capital letters can make your application look very messy and rushed not to mention it looks like you are screaming!

Not everything needs to be bold or italic.

➳ We recommend using a bold font for your name, contact details and job titles. You don't need to use it when talking about your hobbies or job role. Bold font should be for important things only..not everything in between. And Italic? Just stay away from the italic font. Please!

Keep it consistent, simple and uniformed

➳ Make sure you use the same font, size and colour...preferably a black font throughout. A CV that looks like something Picasso made is not going to get you an office job. Being consistent means that your application remains professional, looks neat and is easy on the eye.

Don't, use, too, many, commas, but make sure you use some otherwise it can be a bit too much to read in one go.

➳ Make sure you know what you're doing with your commas and full stops. There doesn't need to be a comma after every word but don't forget about them completely. Commas are there to help you carry on a sentence but still give the reader a break. Use this to your advantage. This means you won't have a bunch of super short sentences which can look simple and not give much to the reader. But please don't forget your capital letters after your full stops!!

So now you have our five top tips on the little things to take into consideration when writing a CV, cover letter or application. Now, go and wow your potential employer with your fancy new CV. You're welcome...
